,Introduction
A business enterprise cannot function on its own. People in the community depend
on businesses to satisfy their need for goods and services. To provide these goods
and services, the business, in turn, depends on the community to supply the factors
of production such as labour, capital and raw materials. This interdependence is
known as the business and its environments. To be successful, a business has to
work within three different environments:
• the micro-environment (the business itself)
• the market environment (factors outside the business which influence it)
• the macro-environment (broad political and economic factors which influence
both the micro-environment and the market environment).
In Grade 9 you were introduced to a few components of the market environment,
such as trade unions, and the macro-environment, such as international,
globalisation and economic growth. In Grade 10 you will look at components of all
three environments (the micro-, market and macro-environments) and how they
interrelate.

Introductory activity

1. What is the difference between economic growth and economic
development?
2. Is globalisation good or bad for people and for businesses?
3. What is the function of trade unions?

Introduction 3

, Topic 1: The micro-environment,
business functions and quality
The micro-environment consists of the business itself. Management has almost
complete control over it. For this reason, the micro-environment is also known as
the decision-making environment, because it is the management of a business that
is responsible for making decisions that help the business to achieve its goals.

The planning and actions which top management take to meet their vision is
called a strategy. The plan of action guides management to achieve its objectives
in a constantly changing environment. This is only possible through the
proper allocation and utilisation of its resources which give the company a
competitive edge (allowing it to outsmart its competitors).

Putting the two concepts of ‘vision’ and ‘strategy’ together, gives you
