Introduction and IOS

AI for an open society
- What are different types of AI?
- How are they used?
- Which problems are we trying to solve using these AI techniques?
It’s not → How do these techniques work (in detail)?

What is an Open Society?
An open society is based on:
- being open towards diversity of knowledge (science, arts, cultural).
- being open towards emancipatory movements and respect for individual rights.
- constitutional democracy and rule of law.
- contestable markets and open borders.

What are institutions?
Institutions are the building blocks of society. These are both written rules and associated
organisations, and unwritten rules and networks. Examples of institutions are: universities,
the government, companies, groups of influence, etc.)

How is the research into Open Societies structured at UU?
Institutions for Open Societies (IOS) are existing formal and informal institutions able to
cope with challenges such as growing socio-economic inequality, the power of ‘big tech’, the
climate crisis, terrorism and discrimination and distrust in government and science.
- And other societal issues of the 21st century; democracy and good governance,
transitions and well-being, equity and diversity.

The question is whether our institutions are equipped for the challenges of an open society’s
future? And, if current institutions fail, how can they be adapted and improved to better
contribute to open and resilient societies?

At IOS, expertise is combined from various fields (e.g. economics, history, public
administration, culture, law, sociology, social psychology, language and communication,
ethics, innovation studies and geography). At UU, this team consists of 700+ researchers, 4
faculties and 15 platforms. Where each platform is associated with specific societal problems.

Platforms:
Democracy and Good Governance
- Contesting governance
- EU Platform
- Futures of democracy
- Markets and corporations
