Within this document I will be analysing and evaluating the recruitment selection process and the extent it contributes to the success of
the business. To come to an evaluation, I will need to understand the factors which affect ASDA which are scope of business activities,
size, workforce planning, recruitment methods, use of outside organisations and ethical and legal considerations. Also, I will consider the
impact on ASDA from ineffective recruitment and staff shortages. With the evaluation of these factors, the effectiveness of ASDA’s
recruitment process can be concluded.
Size and scope
ASDA is a large national business operating within the UK. As of 2019, ASDA has 165,000 full time employees working within 631 uk
stores. ASDA provides UK customers with goods at a cheaper price than rivals Tesco with their aims and objectives stating ‘’to provide
goods and services that are cheap and affordable to the public’’. This has contributed to the success of the businsiness and operating
under their parent organization, Walmart, allows ASDA to operate lower profit margins to lower prices to consumers to overall increase
sales. In 2019, ASDA racked up £22.92 billion in revenue with £803.2million in operating profits. ASDA is considered a large national
business as it employs more than 500 individuals, generates more than $7million in annual receipts and operates entirely within the UK’s
borders.

Workforce planning
Workforce planning refers to the allocation and recruitment of labour to ensure that the business has access to human resources to work
towards their long and short term objectives. Some principles of workforce planning consist of, reducing overall labour costs, workforce
deployment and flexibility, adapting and responding to customer needs, development of employees skills, improving employee retention
rate and improving the overall productivity and quality of output.
During different situations and scenarios, a business may need to recruit more employees in order to keep up with demand, reduce the
manufacturing time or increase the quality of the output. If demand increases, more labour is required to satisfy customers as more
labour reduces the manufacturing time which in turn more goods can be produced increasing overall output. Also, if a business wishes to
improve overall quality, they may recruit specialized personnel who are experienced to reach their goal. Experienced employees can
teach inexperienced workers which improves overall quality as all employees have a better understanding of their goods/services.
ASDA and all supermarkets have an influx in demand as of 2020. This has been a direct result of the pandemic which has spread around
the globe. As a result, ASDA has had to increase staff in all areas of the business from floor staff, delivery drivers and more security. With
more demand, more shelves need to be stacked, more staff needs to work the tills and more security to prevent theft and protect staff
and consumers. Also, with the new regulations, all staff involved in the workforce will need additional briefing about the new rules to
ensure the minimum risk of catching and passing on the virus.

Recruitment process
For ASDA, the recruitment process is crucial and must be simple to attract people to sign up. The first step is to fill out the online
application form. This form will focus upon personality and two aptitude tests. ASDA are looking for good communicators and if they get
to the interview stage, employers are looking for compatibility with the three key factors, customer service, individual respect and striving
for excellence. After being employed, they will be enrolled in ASDA in house training programmes and have the opportunity to pursue
NVQ qualifications. By having the application form online, people have easy access to it which may entice people to sign up.

Job advert
A job advert is an online or physical document which advertises a specific job role within a business to external people. Job adverts can
ask for specific specialties from people and they can target people who have a specific skill set. Job adverts may be seasonal because a
job may only be available during a season. This means a job advert which is targeted for one season has a short life span and the
employer does not need the extra work after that period. Job adverts can be advertised internally or externally for internal employees or
new job roles or external personnel.

Internal and external advertising
Internal advertising is advertising done within the business which the employer wants to quickly and smoothly move staff between
existing positions. This is much cheaper than advertising externally and saves time on finding a suitable candidate. It is also much easier
to advertise to existing staff members as the business can send texts and emails to inform them of the job opening.

External advertising however is the process where the business advertises to new personnel outside of the business to fill an opening.
Businesses often do this when they are looking for a specific skill set and ensure they get the best quality workers. Also, they may
advertise externally when they need more staff and refrain from moving existing employees positions. By advertising externally, it's more
costly however, the business has more choice of candidates as the advertising draws more people which gives the business a chance to
employ the best suited individuals.

Advertised internally and externally
When ASDA needs support through extra workers, ASDA advertised externally to engage new employees so they can expand their
workforce. As ASDA has branches, they have differing employee numbers which is determined by the size of the store and the amount of
customers they get, this enables some stores to advertise internally because they have enough staff however, some stores may be
lacking on staff which may cause them to advertise externally. Advertising internally for ASDA saves time and money as the employees
have already completed their training course and know how the store works but creates another job opening when they leave for the new
position. ASDA may use an email to inform all their employees about the open position. Advertising externally gives ASDA more choice
for employees and gives them more opportunities to select individuals best suited for the job.
External advertisement
ASDA advertises through external websites such as indeed, totaljobs and their own website. Indeed currently has 116 ASDA jobs
available on their website and contains all the necessary and relevant information. However, to apply, individuals have to click a link
which links the job back to the official ASDA website. Indeed works as an advertising agency for jobs which widens the area and
interactions a job gets to increase the likelihood of applications. Totaljobs however have 155 available ASDA jobs. they may also use
their social media outlets to advertise jobs to potential employees.

Recruitment agencies and job centres
Recruitment agencies are often hired for their services by employers whose purpose is to find candidates for their open positions.
Recruitment agencies research open roles to identify what qualities an individual needs to fulfill the role. By understanding the qualities
needed, it is much easier to narrow down applications to find suitable candidates. Recruitment agencies help find specialized talent,
finding new external candidates and aid in house hiring. ASDA uses online recruitment agencies such as linkedin, indeed and totaljobs to
optimise applications and fill any job vacancies.

Jobcentres are where people looking for work can get advice surrounding employment. Job Centres often have advertisements from
external firms advertising open positions. Firms often advertise in job centres to look for new employment as individuals who are looking
