Lanyon Basics:
● Is a doctor
● Used to be close friends with Jekyll but when Jekyll became
obsessed with studying the darker aspects of science, Lanyon broke
off their friendship.
● Lanyon is a contrast to Jekyll as he is a traditional/rational scientist
“Jekyll became too fanciful for me” Chapter 2 (Search for Mr Hyde)
● He is described as “hearty, healthy, dapper, red-faced gentleman”
Chapter 2 (Search for Mr Hyde)
● He appears friendly and sociable and we are told that he “sprang
from his chair and welcomed him with both hands” Chapter 2 (Search
for Mr Hyde)

Rationality
● Both Lanyon and Jekyll are doctors and are both respected.
● They were “inseparable friends” Chapter 6 (Remarkable incident of
Dr Lanyon) “inseparable” something extremely bad must have
happened to end their friendship.
● Lanyon deals with rational science whereas Jekyll deals with mystical
and supernatural science.
● Lanyon thinks this is “unscientific balderdash” Chapter 2 (Search for
Mr Hyde) and claims Jekyll “began to go wrong, wrong in mind”
Chapter 2 (Search for Mr Hyde) repetition of wrong.
● Jekyll thinks Lanyon is an “ignorant blatant pedant” Chapter 3 (Dr
Jekyll was quite at ease)
● Therefore the men no longer share a friendship.
