Tybalt Basics:
 After killing Mercutio in a street brawl, Romeo stabs him which
causes him to be banished.
 Mercutio, who hates Tybalt, gives him the name “Prince of cats”
(Act 2 Scene 4) While Romeo seems like an overeager puppy,
Tybalt tends to walk around proudly attacking anyone.
 Tybalt is violent and quick to draw his sword when he feels his
pride has been injured.
 He loathes the Montague’s.
 He’s the antagonist, opposite to Romeo (protagonist).
 The name Tybalt - “Reynard the Fox” a folk tale about a fox who is
cunning. There is a character in that story called Tybalt who is sly,
cunning and argumentative very similar to Tybalt’s personality in
Romeo and Juliet.
 Tybalt is the instigator of a chain of events eventually sending
Romeo and Juliet into a collision with fate.
 His uncontrollable vengeance, a skilled fighter and sense of
Capulet pride are something to be admired but eventually result in
his eventual death at the hand of Romeo.
 Likes to speak in rhymed couplets to sound menacing.
 Eager to fight to defend his reputation as the strongest Capulet.
Loyal and honours his family rivalry.
 Benvolio and Tybalt are foils; they juxtapose each other in many
ways. Benvolio’s name is synonymous with good and
benevolence. Tybalt’s is linked to a sly and cunning cat. Benvolio
is a peacekeeper and Tybalt is aggressive and eager to fight.
 Tybalt enters the stage during the fight between the servants of the
Capulet’s and Montague’s. Benvolio, a friend of the Montague’s, is
trying to stop the fight. Instead, Tybalt starts fighting with Benvolio.
The situation gets so out of control that the Prince arrives to break
it up.
 Tybalt spots Romeo at a Capulet party. Furious at this invasion, he
wants to fight with Romeo right then and there. Lord Capulet
angrily orders him not to ruin the party. Tybalt obeys him, but he
swears to punish Romeo at the earliest opportunity.
 Tybalt looks for Romeo but finds Benvolio and Mercutio. He trades
some insults with them before Romeo shows up. Tybalt purposely
