Unit 4 – scientific practical techniques

D3 – Evaluate the accuracy of the measurements taken

No matter how accurate an experiment can be, there is always a new instrument or technique that is
available or could be used to make the experiment that little bit more accurate. And so, evaluating
each experiment carried out can show for future use, what better ways there are to reduce errors
and have the most accurate results possible.

In the microscopy experiment, the sterile cotton swabs were relatively accurate. They were
placed into a sealable plastic bag that allowed no air or particles to enter that could possibly disrupt
the accuracy of our findings. The sterile cotton swabs also had long handles as well as being one
ended, with the cotton facing towards the bottom of the plastic bag. This meant if anyone did by any
chance touch the cotton swab we were going to use for the experiment, only the handle would have
been touched allowing the cotton swab to be particle free. However, to make the experiment
slightly more accurate, using cotton swabs that were individually packaged would be more
beneficial. This means that only one person opens that packet and only one person uses the cotton
swab inside, leading to very little or no cross contamination occurring and therefore very accurate
results.

The light microscope within the microscopy experiment was as accurate as possible within a college
environment. With the light microscope having the 40x objective, cheek cells were able to be visually
seen and measured using the eye piece graticule and then the correct calculations could be carried
out to find out the real size of the cell. However, one way this experiment could be even more
accurate would be if there was the availability of being able to carry out oil immersion with the 100x
objective. This would not only allow the cheek cell to be in better view to get a correct measurement
read, but it would also allow for finer details to be visually seen. An even more accurate alternative
would be an electron microscope as edge to edge it can be seen where the cheek cell is and so the
longest length can be accurately measured.
