Clinical Case: Coaching and Teaching
The goal for this diabetes teaching is to educate the patient (children or adolescents) on
how to properly check blood glucose with their Accu-chek monitor as well as understanding the
signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. This is essential to experience
improved health outcomes and live without complications related to diabetes. As with any client
education, there will be a teaching/coaching plan put in place so that the desired outcomes can be
achieved.
The American Diabetes Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) is a great website to

utilize when trying to find resources for the client teaching. The website includes topics on

healthy eating, being active, monitoring, taking medication, problem-solving, reducing risk, and

healthy coping (Engelke, 2017). Another key resource would be the instructional guide or

instructional video that details how to properly use the Accu-chek machine. Lastly, there is the
outpatient clinic or hospital setting that can be used as a resource for educational material.

Teaching strategies will depend on the demographics of the client that is trying to be

reached as well as education level and readiness to learn (Engelke, 2017). Dealing with children
and adolescents means there are creative and interactive strategies that can be used like,

interactive communication, direct instruction, written materials, school-centered telemedicine,
diabetes camps, Internet and other computer-mediated options, video and audio recordings,

support groups, demonstrations and return demonstrations, self-help groups (Engelke, 2017).
Th
According to (Engelke, 2017) education of children with diabetes is most effective when it is
integrated into routine patient care, and when parents are actively involved in learning. The
sh
teaching strategies chosen for each client will need to be individually selected and monitored for
effectiveness.
