Lecture 1 – Introduction to Society and Justice
There are interconnections between sociology and criminology. It’s important for
sociologists to understand how criminologists approach things.
Overview of the Module
This module takes an interdisciplinary approach in the issue of justice in
society
Justice is the main theme
To think about how to bring about greater justice to society
Enable you to think about the quest for justice in gender, class, race/ethnicity
Look at how criminology highlights the injustice that exists
Structure of the module
Exploring 3 topics: gender, class, race/ethnicity
Explore the quest for justice in them through sociology and criminology
Learning Outcomes
To understand why the quest for justice is so important to criminologists and
sociologists and why it’s important to general society (us).
There is no single agreement of what a just society should look like e.g.
agreements are divided on how much income tax people should pay. Is it
fairer to tax someone higher who inherited money from their family or
someone who is earning more money through their job? A lot of the wealth
that people inherit is based on the level of advantage that they have – their
family are upper/middle class.
Example: There is still compensation being paid out for the abolishment of
slavery.
