balance of payments
1. Introduction
The national income accounting records all the expenditures that contribute to a country’s income
and output. The national income is often defined to be the income earned by a nation’s factors of
production.
We will analyse the national income identity. The producers earn an income from buyers who
spend money on goods and services. The amount of expenditure by buyers = the amount of
income for sellers = the value of production.


2. The national income accounts
A country’s gross national product (GNP) is the value of all final goods and services produced by
the country’s factors of production and sold on the market in a given time period.
The factors of production are workers (labour services), physical capital (buildings and equipment),
natural resources and others.
The value of final goods and services produced by US-owned factors of production are counted as
US GNP.
To distinguish among the different types of expenditure that make up a country’s GNP, we divide
the GNP among the four possible uses for which a country’s final output is purchased:
- Consumption: the amount consumed by private domestic residents. This component makes
up the lion’s share of GNP.
- Investment: expenditure by
firms on buildings and
equipment
- Government purchases: the
amount used by the
government
- The current account balance:
net expenditure by foreigners
on domestic goods and
service (exports - imports)
On of the major reasons for
dividing the GNP into subcategories is to help us understand the cause of a particular recession
and then create a sound policy response. Those subcategories are identity drivers of big
economic changes.1


2.1. National product and national income
A country’s national income is the income earned in a period by its factors of production. The
national income should equal the GNP a country generates over the same period of time.
The principle that output and income are the same also applies to goods. When someone buys a
good, the value of the purchase enters the GNP and the payment enters the income of the seller.
To avoid double counting, only the sale of final goods and services that are produced are entered
