Career Development Advisor Meeting Preparation Setting a career advisor appointment was an important step for me. Because of the brevity of the appointment ahead, I had 40 minutes; I wanted to make sure that I get the most out of it. To do this, I made the following preparation. I wrote down in a mind map format what my interests are and the experiences I have had. Because this was in a brainstorm, I later edited the list to show only what I thought was necessary. I then visited the CDC’s learn about yourself website and explored what exactly were values, interests, personality, and skills after which I drew a column for each and noted down something under each section. I realized that I had some interests confused for values and vice versa. I then checked out the career guide section and narrowed down what I think my combination of skills, personality, values, and interest might support. After which I took the Life Values Inventory and later came up with a brief description of what I expected from the advisor. My expectation from the session was to get a way forward on how to decide my major. There, I started with narrowing down my majors and then having a look at what might become my career path if I chose that particular major. I then made a mind map of my brainstorm of what I thought I needed to build my resume. The most outstanding of these inclusions were; enrolling in the major, internships, and joining associated clubs around campus. I took the life values inventory exercise. On it I realized the values that inform my behavior the most. I realized that being independent, protecting the environment, being liked by others, and making money were the most influential values to my behavior. Giving my opinion and concern in spiritual belief were the values that influenced my behavior the least. This was a very enlightening and interesting process to undertake because it makes my meeting quite easy.
