𝑦 ′′ − 4𝑦 ′ + 4𝑦 = 0, 𝑦(0) = 3, 𝑦 ′ (0) = 1


Solve homogeneous equation

Characteristic equation:

𝑟 2 − 4𝑟 + 4 = 0
(𝑟 − 2)2 = 0 ⇒ 𝑟 = 2 (repeated root)


General solution

𝑦(𝑥) = (𝐶1 + 𝐶2 𝑥)𝑒 2𝑥


First derivative

𝑦 ′ = 𝐶2 𝑒 2𝑥 + (𝐶1 + 𝐶2 𝑥)(2𝑒 2𝑥 )
𝑦 ′ = (𝐶2 + 2𝐶1 + 2𝐶2 𝑥)𝑒 2𝑥


Apply initial conditions

At 𝑥 = 0:
