NSG 6020 WEEK 9 DISCUSSION RESPONSES
NSG 6020 WEEK 9 DISCUSSION RESPONSES Great post Tameika. I wanted to add a few teaching points that we should be educating our patients about regarding sun exposure and protection. It is important for providers to educate patients about skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common. Fair skin people are at the highest risk, common skin cancer is basal cell carcinoma, then squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. The best advice to prevent against skin cancer is avoid ultraviolet radiation exposure. The patient should be taught to avoid midday sun, use sunscreen, wear protective long sleeve clothing, hats with wide brims. Indoor tanning should be avoided, especially teens, and young adults. If a patient uses a tanning bed before 35 years, it increases the chance of melanoma by 75%. Patients should use SPF 30 and higher, be water resistant, and broad spectrum (Bickley, 2017).
