 Question 1

1. Explain in your own words, in three sentences for each concept, what the following concepts
mean, provide an in-text reference from any source used for each of them, where these concepts
are discussed.

1.1. Ego strength

Ego strength refers to an individual's ability to handle adversity, emotional stress, and setbacks
without being overwhelmed by negative feelings like shame or despair. It reflects how confident a
person feels about their self-worth and how resilient they are when facing challenges (PRF3701,
2023:23). A person with strong ego strength is often assertive and able to maintain stability despite
difficult circumstances, making them more likely to make consistent ethical decisions.

1.2. Field dependence

Field dependence refers to an individual's tendency to process information globally, focusing on the
bigger picture rather than breaking down issues into smaller components. These individuals are more
socially oriented and respond to external social cues, which influences their decision-making
(PRF3701, 2023:24). Field-dependent people tend to be less analytical in their thinking and more
influenced by social environments and rewards.

1.3. Locus of control

Locus of control refers to the degree to which individuals believe they have control over their life
events. Those with an internal locus of control feel they are responsible for their successes and
failures, while those with an external locus of control attribute outcomes to external factors like luck
or powerful others (PRF3701, 2023:25). A stronger internal locus typically leads to greater
self-reliance and responsibility for moral actions.
