Explain and analyse three ways in which the president may use
his cabinet (9)
One way in which the president may use his cabinet is
monitoring Congress by having cabinet meetings to get an
insight of legislation that’s going through Congress that they
have significant interest in. This allows the cabinet to present
progress to the president, an example of this would be Obama
in February 2015 discussing his policy agenda in Congress that
year. By monitoring congress in this way, the president can be
updated with the most recent information on legislation.
Another way in which the president may use his cabinet is
enforcing a cabinet meeting in order to provide the cabinet the
opportunity to give out information as well as to gather
information. This allows each department in the cabinet to
speak up on current issues and activity to the president so he
or she is informed to the fullest extent on current affairs.
Having these cabinet meetings allows the president to create a
bond with the cabinet members so the cabinet is more willing
to push forward the president’s agenda. In addition to this,
cabinet meetings also allow the president to present important
topics that may affect all cabinet officers such as elections that
are coming up or major legislation; Obama used this technique
within a cabinet meeting in order to discuss the possible partial
shutdown of the federal government. This is of benefit to the
President because it allows them to gather information from
every member on current activity.
Another way in which the president may use his cabinet is for
policy debate within a cabinet meeting in order to get different
perspectives on a specific objective. An example of this being
an advantage to the President is when Bush discussed with his
cabinet about an important foreign policy issue. Furthermore,
this allowed Bush to gain a more efficient outcome by debating
a topic with cabinet members from different departments.
The cabinet is an important asset to the president as it provides
him/her with information from every department e.g. sectaries
of the treasury, education, and health and human services, all
of which are very important and are most definitely in the
interest of the president in order to run the country
