US HISTORY Week 3 Discussion 2 | SOPHIA PATHWAY
US HISTORY Week 3 Discussion 2 Analyze the rise of our understanding of intimate partner violence? So this is something that we deal with all the time in the military. Intimate partner violence is essentially called or sometimes called domestic violence. According to our text, intimate partner violence “can be a husband or wife, an ex-husband or ex-wife, a boyfriend or girlfriend, or a dating partner.” (Daigle, 2017) When you are dealing with intimate partner violence it includes sexual, physical and or emotional abuse. It can also include stalking or sexual coercion by a former partner or a current one. Sometimes it an arduous situation to process when wives come in and say their husband or their significant other raped them, however, we actually get this a lot. So there are physical acts with are hitting, slapping or beating their spouse. Then there is the emotional side of it where you have insults, constant humiliation, belittling, and threats. Once they report it, they immediately try to stop the progressive of the case. According to our text, “victims more often wished to withdraw the charges when the perpetrator was an intimate parter.” (Davis, Lurigio & Herman, 2013) What are some common risk factors associated with intimate partner violence? Some common risks factors associated are marital conflicts, marital struggles, or tension. It can be marital instability. Maybe they are currently going through a divorce. Also, it could be because a member is trying to dominate and control the relationship. There are a plethora of risks that are associated with intimate partner violence. However, this is what we deal with the most. How do age, gender, and financial resources impact an individual's ability to address intimate partner violence? Age I would say would have a lot to do addressing intimate partner violence. Think about it in a stalking sense. You wouldn’t normally have this issue with the older group, however, our cases normally happen to the 20-35 age group. Those people especially the younger married couple still go out to clubs, higher risk of cheating, and have the biggest immature behavior which increase the chances of this type of behavior to happen. As far as gender, the majority of the cases the violence comes from the husband, however, some cases the woman do initiate it. Whether that was due to psychological warfare, cheating on a spouse or which gets into my last comment, financial resources. Financial resources plays a major role in successful relationships. When you are struggling financially, a lot of problems arise. Especially, when one of the spouses are mismanaging money. During this stage, intimate partner violence is typical.
