Explain and justify how you would show development of the character Gooper in cat in a
hot tin roof
You should focus on two key extracts:
- Production style
- Characters objectives
- Character positioning
- How ideas create tension
Intro:
As a director I will use a fusion of naturalistic acting and positioning with expressionistic
costume design and physicality to create a sense of tension and Goopers feeling of never
being good enough to match Big Daddy’s expectations. My first extract is page 57 as I feel
this best conveys Big Daddy’s and Goopers relationship and how one sided it appears. My
second extract in the original production of Act 3 page 79-89 as I believe this best
conveys Goopers character development as he stands up more to everyone instead of his
passive leaving beforehand.
Production style:
Naturalistic / expressionistic costume:
POINT - I will use a fusion of naturalistic and expressionistic costume to convey the
period of 1955 as well as his desire to maintain the image of the American dream and the
better brother to Big Daddy.
EVIDENCE EXT 1 - I will use a
EVIDENCE EXT 2 -
ANALYSIS - A problem I will have is maintaining the quality of his image and handling
the expensive materials so they appear to look new and clean. Helping me convey to the
audience Cooper's desire to maintain the image and as that begins to deteriorate when he
loses his patience
EVALUATION - A play I was inspired by was Dorian directed by Owen Horsley in
which Dorian begins the play with a white pirate style cotton shirt with lace thrills and
tight velvet black pants however as his corruption continued within the play the pirate
shirt changed to a sequin blazer allowing the audience to see his slow corruption similar
to Gooper becoming more unnerved and stepping away from the perfect image as he
feels maybe Big Daddy will love him more.
Character Objectives:
POINT - As a director I will use both vocal and physicality to conveys Goopers smaller
objectives within his speech highlighting his super objective of wanting to have Big
Daddy's love to gain the plantation home
