Briefly describe the criteria that must be satisfied through a good policy statement. [10]
According to Louw (2016:3-4) stated that a good policy statement must satisfy certain criteria.
These criteria are as follows:
❖ A good safety policy statement is derived from the vision statement of the organisation.
❖ It conveys the vision and commitment of senior management towards safety.
❖ It communicates the organisation’s safety culture to employees and other stakeholders.
❖ It conveys commitment to continued improvement of safety performance.
❖ It shows that adequate resources, such as time and money, are being committed to the
safety system process and the improvement of overall safety performance.
❖ It is accompanied by clear assignment of responsibilities.
❖ It communicates implementation targets and review dates to all levels of employees.
❖ It conveys commitment to legal compliance.
❖ It shows that effective communication is a priority.
❖ It inspires employee commitment and involvement in improving safety.

According to Smit (2016:24) stated that in formulating the organizational HSE policy, a priori
safety knowledge should be utilized to establish and include important principles and objectives,
namely:
❖ Complete protection of the health and safety of all people who will engage with the
organization in any capacity.
❖ Compliance with all applicable and preferred local, national and international legal
requirements and directives.
