Use commas to set off the following:
Three or more equally ranked items in a series
Names of people spoken to in direct address
Parenthetical expressions that interrupt the flow of a sentence and are unnecessary grammatically
(by the way, on the contrary, and so forth)
The second and following elements in dates and time zones
The second and following elements in addresses and geographical areas
Nonessential appositives (nouns or pronouns renaming preceding words)
Independent adjectives (two or more adjectives that equally modify a noun)
Introductory verbal phrases
Introductory prepositional phrases totaling four or more words
Independent clauses joined by coordinating conjunctions
Introductory dependent clauses
Terminal dependent clauses if they add unnecessary information or an afterthought
Nonessential clauses
