QUESTION 1

Analyse the similarities and differences between a financial profile and a
behavioural profile in the context of financial crime detection. In your response,
evaluate their respective key elements and purposes, and explain how each
contributes to identifying fraudulent activity.

According to Learning Unit 3 (pp. 17–19), a financial profile is essentially a financial
statement about an individual. It shows what the subject earns, owns, owes, and
spends at any given time, or over a period; it reflects a subject’s income, expenses,
assets, and liabilities. Its purpose is to establish a subject’s financial standing and to
identify discrepancies between declared income and actual wealth.

A behavioural profile, on the other hand, contains information about the suspect’s
personal characteristics e.g. carrying large amounts of cash, wearing expensive clothes,
club memberships, vehicles, and leisure activities. It reveals the subject’s lifestyle habits
that might lead to identifying hidden wealth or assets.

Similarities

Both profiles are used in financial crime investigations to uncover fraudulent activity.
They complement each other by providing a holistic view of the subject financial data
combined with lifestyle indicators.

, Differences

 Financial profile is quantitative and based on verifiable financial data (income, assets,
liabilities).
 Behavioural profile is qualitative and focuses on lifestyle habits and personal
characteristics.
 Purpose of financial profile: To analyse net worth and identify unexplained wealth.
 Purpose of behavioural profile: To detect lifestyle inconsistencies that may indicate
hidden income.

Contribution to fraud detection

The financial profile reveals whether a subject is living beyond their means by
comparing income to assets and expenses. The behavioural profile fills information
gaps by highlighting lifestyle indicators that suggest undisclosed income, such as luxury
purchases or expensive holidays.
