Drainage
The area drainaged by a single river system is called a drainage.

An elevated area, which separate two drainage basins is known as water divide.

•Himalayan river •Peninsular river

1.River found in himalyan areas. River found in southern area.

2.They are perinnial. (have water always) They are not. (Dependent on rainfall)

3.Water come from glaciers. Water come from lakes, ponds, etc.

4.Longer usally. Shorter than himalayan rivers.

5.They perform intensive erosion Not such treat.

Meander: A meander is one of a series of regular curves, loops, turns in the channel of a river.

Oxbow lakes: A U-shaped lake the forms when a wide meander of a river is cut off, creating a
free standing body.

Gorge: A gorge is a narrow valley with steep, rocky walls located between hills or mountains.

Estuary: A partially enclosed, coastal water body, where fresh water & mixes with salt water
from the ocean.

•The Indus river:

Rises in the Tibet near mansarovar lake.

Then it flows west & join/enters india from ladhak.

In kashmir it joins with:

i) Shyok

ii) Zaskar

iii) Nubra

, iv) Hunza

In mithankot (Pak) it joins with:

i) Beas

ii) Chanab

iii) Satluj

iv) Jhelum

v) Ravi

Then it flows southward & drain in arabian sea.

Total lenth - 2900 km

1/3rd in india & rest in Pakistan.

India sign Indus water treaty with pak in 1960.

•The ganga River:

Formed from glacier, gangotri. In that area known as Bhagirathi.

Join alaknanda in Devprayag in UK.

In haridwar, it emerged from mountain to plains.

In allahbad meet with yamuna.

In UP it meet with Ghagera, gandak & kosi.

Its peninsular tributaries are, Chambal, Betwa & son.

At farakka (west bangal) it divides to bangladesh & bit merged in Bay of bangal, know as
Bhagirathi - hogly.

Delta - Sundarban delta.

Lenth - 2,500 km

Ambala - Water divide (Indus & ganga).

In bangladesh - Ganga is joined by bangladesh & brahmaptura & further down called as
"Meghna".
