Topic: The Use of Females as Drug Mules in Transnational Drug Smuggling
1. Introduction
Transnational organised crime has become one of the most significant global security
threats in the twenty-first century. Among its various manifestations, drug trafficking
remains one of the most profitable and widespread criminal enterprises. According to
the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC, 2023), global drug markets are
expanding, with organised criminal networks adapting innovative methods to transport
narcotics across borders.
South Africa plays a strategic role in international drug routes due to its developed
infrastructure, major airports, and maritime trade connections (Van Heerden and
Minnaar, 2016). One emerging dimension of this phenomenon is the increased use of
women as drug couriers, commonly referred to as drug mules.
This essay critically discusses the use of females as drug mules in drug smuggling
operations. It defines key concepts, examines the local and international occurrence of
female drug mules, analyses motivations, profiles typical offenders, evaluates
smuggling methods, and assesses prevention measures.
2. Definition of Key Concepts
2.1 Drug Trafficking
Drug trafficking refers to the large-scale production, transportation, and distribution of
illegal narcotics across local and international markets (UNODC, 2023). It forms part of
organised criminal enterprises that operate across borders for financial gain.
Unlike simple possession or consumption, trafficking involves structured networks,
supply chains, and financial systems.
2.2 Drug Smuggling
