Employee behavior and motivation
Professional behavior: ‘’the pattern of actions by the members of an organization that
directly or indirectly influences the organization’s effectiveness.’’ Three forms:
- Performance behavior: what is expected
- Organizational citizenship: how do YOU contribute to the organization
- Counterproductive behavior: behavior that detracts from, rather than contributes to,
organizational performance. (like politics and your personal life).

Physical, psychological and emotional, everyone is different.

Feedback is very important. IQ and EQ (emotional intelligence).

There is a psychological contact between you and an organization:

Behavioral theory Maslow. First basic needs before you can get to the higher level:
1. Physiological: breathing, food, sex, sleep
2. Safety: security of body, of employment, of resources, of property, of health
3. Love/belonging: friendship, family, sexual intimacy
4. Esteem: self-esteem, confidence, respect of others
5. Self-actualization: morality, creativity, problem solving

Contemporary theory. Expectancy. People work towards rewards.
Equity theory. People evaluate their treatment by employer relative to treatment of others.

How to apply theories on motivation practice?
Organizations have implemented programs
- Positive reinforcement
- Management by objectives
- Participative management
- Team management
- Job enrichment/ job redesign
- Modified work schedules

Job redesign:
Designing a more satisfactory fit between workers and their jobs.
