Nature of management consist of
- Basic management functions (four: planning, organizing, directing and control)
- Science and art of management
- Becoming a manager
Planning: forecasted goals and targets.
Organising: organisation chart.
Directing: manager leads the employees to the goals set.
Control: manager evaluates the whole process.
Basic management skills:
1. Human relation skills: skills to communicate and cooperate with others. Art of:
- understanding and being understood.
- Getting along with others
- The so-called soft skills
2. Time management skills: how to divide time between different activities. Art of:
- Prioritizing
- Delegating
- Goal setting
- Multitasking
3. Technical skills: skills necessary to get the job done (excel etc). Art of:
- techniques you learn
- Experience you will have
- Becoming specialised person
- The so-called hard skills.
4. Conceptual skills: ability to work with abstract concepts and making ideas. Art of:
- Thinking beyond
5. Decision making skills: enhanced by using the circle of Demming (Planning,
organizing, directing and controlling). Art of:
- Problem definition
- Fact gathering
- Identifying solutions
- Evaluating alternatives
- Implement and learn
6. Global management skills: combining knowledge of business, culture, history and
social practices. Art of:
‘’So, management is the process of planning, organising, directing and controlling an
organisation’s financial, human and information resources to achieve its goals’’.

At the top: CEO + CFO
Middle: HRM, Marketing, IT, Operation
First-line: Supervisors
From bottom to top: power and complexity increases.
