WGU D218 Task 2 | LATEST UPDATE WITH
COMPLETE SOLUTIONS
Three leaderships skills that are present in myself are motivation, inspiration, and
collaborating well with others. I try my hardest to motivate those that I am working with,
especially during a shift where staffing is short, and everyone seems overwhelmed. I will do
something like buying lunch for those that want it, get a snack for everyone as a pick me up, start
telling goofy jokes to get people to laugh, or a combination of all of the above. Inspiration comes
from everywhere and if I can help someone think that they can do better or do something that
they previously thought was unattainable, then I know that I have made a difference. I am able to
collaborate and coordinate with others especially when it comes to making sure my patients are
getting the best care possible. I work closely with the others on the treatment teams to ensure that
the patient is getting everything that they need. The nurses that I work with know that I am
always available to help in any way that I can, even if it is something as small as answering a
question or assisting in patient care.
Three management skills that I possess are: being able to provide training to new nurses,
evaluate someone’s work, and provide structure on the floor. I usually participate in orientee’s
training frequently and am confident in my ability to do so. During previous shifts, I have had
the difficult decision to send someone home when they were not working. This one person in
particular that I sent home had picked up the shift for bonus and instead of being helpful, sat at
the desk and did not do anything. I was out of staffing that night, so I sent her home and took
over her duties. I think that things run better and more smoothly when there is structure involved.
I tend to let everyone know how things are going to go during the day with the room for an
unexpected incident to come up. Others working on those days have told me how much better
they like it when I am in charge and able to run things the way that I prefer to.
, Three leadership skills that I find absent in myself are: taking risks, being open to change,
and being able to innovate new plans for the floor. I do not like to take risks; I like to stick to
what I know works and is beneficial. I feel like this goes hand in hand with another skill that I
find lacking in myself and that is change. Unless I can see that the change that is being asked of
me will benefit not only myself but others, I am known to drag my feet. I do not to deviate from
what I know works and has proven to be helpful in the past. I have been asked to think of
innovative things to better my floor in the past and I have not been able to come up with things.
Once again, this goes back to my mindset of “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it.” I do recognize that
evolving things can make things better for everyone involved, I just do not have the mindset to
take the initiative to do so.
Three management skills that I find that I lack are: being mindful of the floor’s budget,
being number oriented, and pushing through new policies. I understand that a floor needs to stay
in budget and not go over, however, I feel that if you go over budget in order to make sure a floor
is adequately staffed. I know that as a manager this is something that I would struggle with
doing. This goes hand in hand with being a not being a numbers person. I am very honest when I
tell others that I am not number oriented. I am not strong when it comes to pushing through new
policies, I would rather stay with methods that I know work until I am shown that something new
and different works better. I know that this makes me look stubborn, but it is not something that I
mind until I am shown that the new policy is beneficial.
I can improve my motivation skill by staying positive and leave any negativity outside the
door to my facility. I feel that if I start the day off on the right foot, the others that I am working
with will pick up on my mood and will also start the day off in a good mood. Another way to
improve my motivation is to set a goal for myself for either the day or the week. At the end of
