This assignment was overall scored as a merit however if I were to work out the percentage errors it would have been a distinction.

Assignment 1- keeping up the standards

This assignment requires me to show and explain how I used different skills in a
range of practical procedures and techniques in order to make and test standard
solutions. I did two titrations to work out the concentrations of solutions. I also
carried out colorimetry to work out the absorbance of a solution.

Part 1- Titration
Standard solution for sodium carbonate
Within this assignment I learnt how to create a standard solution and for this to
happen I calculated the amount of sodium carbonate needed to make a standard
solution. Sodium carbonate is a primary standard and it is pure and stable.

Calculation -
Sodium Carbonate (Na2C03)

Before I carried out the titration, I had to make a standard solution. I used 250cm 3 of solution
which had a concentration of 0.05mol/dm3, so to work out how many grams of Na2C03 I used this
calculation below:

Concentration = moles/volume x1000
Moles = mass/Mr

Mass =1.33g
Moles = 1.33/106 = 0.013 moles
Concentration = 0.013/0.25 = 0.052 moles/dm3

Volume = 250cm3 = 0.25dm3
1.33g Sodium Carbonate is needed

Equipment-
- Weighing boat
- A balance to 2dp so the weight was accurate and precise
- Distilled water
- Sodium carbonate
- Beaker
- Glass stirring rod
- Volumetric flask
- Funnel

, Assignment 1- keeping up the standards

Method-
1. Calibrate the weighing scale
2. Zero the weighing scale
3. Weigh out between 1.2g and 1.4g of sodium carbonate into a weighing
boat and record the mass, for my experiment I weighed 1.33g
4. Transfer the contents into a larger beaker
5. Rinse the weighing boat and add this to the beaker
6. Dissolve the sodium carbonate with de-ionised water and stir with a stirring
rod
7. Transfer the solution into a volumetric flask using a funnel
8. Wash the beaker, rod and funnel with de-ionised water letting the
remainder of the solution into the flask
9. Add more water until the 250cm3 line
10. Add a stopper and shake the flask to mix the contents

A standard solution is a solution containing a precisely known concentration of an
element of a substance. They’re used in chemistry to help identify the
concentration of unknown substances during a titration. Analytical chemists
separate and determine chemical components in materials, and so standard
solutions are used to help in this process to try and accurately figure out the other
components in the material.

Titration of HCl against Na2CO3

Na2C03 + 2HCl 2NaCl + H20 + C02

Equipment-
- Pipette
- Pipette filler
- Funnel
- Burette
- Clamp and clamp stand
- White tile
- Hydrochloric acid
- Sodium Carbonate Standard Solution
- Universal indicator
- Conical flask
- Beakers x2
