A: Identification of Scenario
Family – Mary comes from a biracial family, including a Hispanic mum and an African-American dad.
Her father’s work has made them relocating every 6 months from a big city to a small and rural town.
Community – Her community has changed from a big city (with different cultures) to a small rural
town that is dominated mostly by white. Her school is the same as the town, mostly white and middle-class
Learners.
Cultural background – In a mixed culture household in a big city, Mary is accustomed to a multicultural
living environment. Whereas, her new neighbors and classmates are not used to a variety of cultural
backgrounds as they are mostly white, middle-class families.
B1: Action
Since Mary is feeling stress, and facing suicidal thoughts, I as her teacher would have often arrange
meeting with her to ensure she knows I am there for her to talk to, and direct her to other options like a school
counselor or school psychologist. I would start with asking her basic questions about how she is feeling about
this new transition and offer her help on new assignments she may feel behind on. As far as the overall bullying
she is facing, I would try to lead a lesson on anti bullying, without any obvious remarks on that situation. If it is
okay with Mary, I would include a lesson on expanding our knowledge learning about different cultures.

Being empathetic and making sure Mary I am there for her will give her reassurance she has someone
