Chronic Bacterial Prostatitis
, More subtle presentation than acute & typically seen in older men - pain in
perineum, lower back or abdomen, testicles, & with ejaculation
C/o frequency, urgency, & rarely low-grade fever (mimic UTI)
Tx: same as for acute
~Bactrim or Quinolone x 4-6 weeks
Alpha-adrenergic antagonists (aka Alpha 1 Blockers)
Provide immediate relief of symptoms by decreasing bladder outlet
obstruction & increasing flow of urine
May cause a decrease in BP & dizziness
~teach patients to take pills at night
Uro-selective:
Ex: Tamsulosin (Flomax) / Silodosin (Rapaflo) / Alfuzosin (Urozatral)
Non-selective / Older agents (not commonly used)
Ex: Doxazosin (Cardura) / Prazosin (Minipress) / Terazosin (Hytrin)
