SECTION 1: ESSAY WRITING (Paper 1)
• Types of Essays: Narrative, Descriptive, Reflective, Discursive, Argumentative.
• Structure: Introduction (clear thesis), Body Paragraphs (PEEL method), Conclusion (strong final
statement).
• PEEL Method: Point – Evidence – Explain – Link.
• Argumentative Essays: Present BOTH sides but support one clearly.
• Use formal language unless writing a narrative.
• Avoid slang and contractions in formal essays.
• Plan before writing (5–7 minutes planning = higher marks!).
• Check spelling, grammar and punctuation in the last 5 minutes.
SECTION 2: TRANSACTIONAL WRITING (Paper 1)
• Types: Formal Letter, Informal Letter, Speech, Article, Review, Report, Diary Entry.
• Always follow the correct format (addresses, date, salutation, closing).
• Match the tone to the purpose and audience.
• Formal writing = respectful, clear, professional.
• Speech writing = use rhetorical questions and persuasive language.
• Article writing = catchy headline + engaging introduction.
SECTION 3: LITERATURE STUDY (Paper 2)
• Know the plot summary of your novel, drama and poetry.
• Study themes (e.g. power, identity, conflict, love, justice).
• Understand character development and relationships.
• Memorise key quotes (short and powerful).
• Poetry: Identify tone, mood, theme, imagery and poetic devices.
• Drama: Study stage directions, symbols and conflict.
• Always refer to the question when answering contextual questions.
