Questions to answer on the UNODC ‘Global Report on Trafficking in Persons’


1. What does the design of the report communicate? For example, how is it laid
out?
 There is an intro to the broader content
 Size of the problems
 Profile of the victims
 Profile of the offenders
 Chapter 2 is organised by regions
 People are trafficked for different reasons
 Who is it that is likely to be trafficked?
 How do we know that it is a report?
 The UN intervene in conflict areas where member states can offer support
around the countries.
 The report contains references.
 The report contains the official logo of the UN
 In the intro part, there is a preface from the director which acts as a seal of
approval. It is like an endorsement. It gives confidence that this report can be
trusted.
 An executive summary is like an extract for people who don’t have time to
read all the pages. Policy makers would read this part to get an overview of
the report.
 From the executive summary, we are told that trafficking is a continuing
problem. The problem is on the increase. More people are getting convicted.
It reports that there is a growth of incidences where people have been
trafficked.


2. How does the design add to the credibility of the report or its persuasiveness?
 UN is a respected organisation
 Membership is made up of individual states
 It interferes on behalf of people
 Reliable
 The preface is signed off by the head which acts as a rubber stamp. It’s like
saying that this is something that I would recommend you to read.


3. In what ways does the report convey authority?
It uses referencing which acts as a way of bringing authority.
