Unit 8
P3 - Explain how factors affect travel to long-haul
destinations
, Time Zones and Length of Flight
An example of a long-haul destination that has a significantly different timezone to the UK would be somewhere like
Australia. Australia is across the world therefore, it is on a completely different time of day than the usual 1-2 hour difference
that some holiday destinations have. This can have a major effect on travelling to that country due to a variety of different
factors. Whenever it is the morning time in the UK, in Australia it is night time and what makes this even more intricate is the
fact that many different areas in Australia also differ slightly in time. Therefore, tourists must research their holiday well in
advance in order to prepare and know exactly what to expect. Time zones can cause a declination in travel due to
travellers becoming susceptible to major jet lag. The tourist may face difficulty trying to adjust to the different setting and
local time zone, resulting in fatigue which then has a knock on effect to the rest of their stay. Different groups of people can
become affected in different ways. Travellers can be especially affected if they are dehydrated, have been drinking prior to
the flight, are pregnant or are elderly, to name a few. DVT is a condition that which, if caught, will also cause health
implications and affect customers of long-haul travel. For example a flight from London to Sydney takes 21 hours and 35
minutes which is a long time to stay sat down and is therefore a high risk for customers to get DVT, which could make the
customers want to stay local rather than having to deal with DVT or a jet lag.
