, Learning Aim A- Examine how effective recruitment and selection
contribute to business success
This is a report that looks at Tesco, a large business that has over 250+ employees and
trades in the European Union and evaluates how effective recruitment and selection
contribute to the business' success.
Tesco is a multinational groceries and general merchandise retailer which was founded
by Jack Cohen in 1919 when he was selling groceries from a stall in the East End of
London. Tesco now has 16,553 stores worldwide with over 450,000 employees. Tesco
Superstores are stanard and large supermarkets, providing groceries and much smaller
ranges of non-food goods. Tesco’s headquarters are in Herfordshire, England and has
managed to become the nation's favorite supermarket as they came from humble
beginnings and their customers can relate to them.
P1 – Explain how a large business recruits and selects giving reason for their processes
Lage businesses such as Tesco do recruitment and selection processes as it is
important for them to attract a good workforce and allows their business to run
smoothly. It is important for a business such as Tesco to have a good workforce as it
can determine the business success as one of the most important parts of a business is
their employees.
Within Tesco they will have internal meetings to identify too see if they need any job
roles filling within the business. The management can then discuss if there are any
alternatives to recruitment such as sharing the work between employees, provide paid
overtime, re-structure the job roles they already have and distribute the workload
between the remaining employees or just dissolve the role altogether. Job positions can
become available for several different reasons within Tesco such as the employee has
got a new job, got a promotion to a different department, went on maternity leave or
he/she has retired.
In the next stage of the hiring process at Tesco they will then make a job description
which will outline the main duties and responsibilities that the job requires. For example,
a Customer Assistant Role at Tesco they are looking for an applicant who can 2‘provide
a seamless personal experience’ too their customers. The job description also states
various jobs you will be doing for them e.g. Using the tills and stocking shelves. For
Tesco to get the right candidates for the role they must ensure that their job description
is very detailed too the applicants to ensure they know what they are specifically
applying for and if it’s the right job for them. There are 3 main parts of a job description
which are the title of the job which helps indicate the level of importance of the job,
which department and location the job is being advertised for; responsibilities tell the
applicant about any people / items they are responsible for. Tesco then writes a person
specification which includes the skills, experience, knowledge and qualifications needed
for the job for the applicant to perform the job role to the highest of standards. Tesco do
