Self, agency and ethics are important ideas in education because classrooms are not only
places where learners receive subject knowledge. They are also spaces where learners and
teachers make choices about identity, belief, respect, responsibility and belonging. In
education, the self is shaped by personal history, family life, religion, culture, language and
social experience, which means that agency is never exercised in an empty space
(Emirbayer & Mische, 1998). This essay argues that teachers and learners can exercise
agency when they reflect on their convictions, act responsibly, and respect the convictions of
others, but this agency is always shaped by school rules, cultural expectations and available
