SECTION A: LITERARY ESSAY – 60 Marks
Rubric
 Planning: You can use a mind map, but planning itself doesn’t give marks.
 Length: About 600 words is suggested. Focus on how well you develop your ideas, not just
length. No word count needed.
 Rubric Use: This is a guide, not a checklist. Half marks can be given if needed.

 Highly eloquent and well-written.
 Shows deep knowledge of the text.
 Has a strong individual voice.
 Develops an argument that is logical, clear, and sophisticated.
 Uses quotations effectively, weaving them into your argument.

 Style is smooth and professional.
 The essay is free from mistakes.
 Exceeds expectations in depth and understanding of the topic.




PARAGRAPHS & TOPIC SENTENCES:

 Topic sentences should be clear and simple, just like your thesis.
 Avoid compound and complex sentences for topic sentences; they can confuse the reader.
 After the topic sentence, explain and defend it with details, facts, and textual support.
 Main points should always be clearly stated.
Body Paragraph Flow:
 Use transitional words or phrases to connect paragraphs and ideas.
 Transitional words help:
o Connect sentences, paragraphs, and ideas.
o Convey information clearly and concisely.
o Establish a logical argument.
o Signal relationships between ideas.
o Organise paragraphs logically.
o Create flow between claim and evidence.
Examples of Transitional Words:
 Addition: also, again, as well as, besides, furthermore, in addition, likewise, moreover, similarly
 Consequence: therefore, thus, accordingly, as a result, consequently, for this reason, for this
purpose, otherwise, subsequently
 Generalising: as a rule, as usual, for the most part, generally, ordinarily, usually
 Exemplifying: chiefly, especially, for instance, in particular, namely, particularly, including,
specifically, such as
 Illustration: for example, for instance, for one thing, as an illustration, illustrated with, as an
example, in this case
 Emphasis: above all, chiefly, with attention to, especially, particularly, singularly
 Similarity: comparatively, coupled with, correspondingly, identically, likewise, similar, moreover
 Exception: aside from, barring, besides, except, excepting, excluding, exclusive of, other than,
outside of
 Restatement: in essence, in other words, namely, that is, in short, in brief
 Contrast / Comparison: nevertheless, in contrast, contrast, conversely, instead, likewise, on the
contrary, rather, similarly, yet, but, however, still
 Sequence: firstly, secondly, lastly, at first, at the same time, later on, meanwhile, next, then, soon,
in the meantime, later, while, earlier, simultaneously, afterward
