Topic sentences should be clear and simple, just like your thesis.
Avoid compound and complex sentences for topic sentences; they can confuse the reader.
After the topic sentence, explain and defend it with details, facts, and textual support.
Main points should always be clearly stated.
Body Paragraph Flow:
Use transitional words or phrases to connect paragraphs and ideas.
Transitional words help:
o Connect sentences, paragraphs, and ideas.
o Convey information clearly and concisely.
o Establish a logical argument.
o Signal relationships between ideas.
o Organise paragraphs logically.
o Create flow between claim and evidence.
Examples of Transitional Words:
Addition: also, again, as well as, besides, furthermore, in addition, likewise, moreover, similarly
Consequence: therefore, thus, accordingly, as a result, consequently, for this reason, for this
purpose, otherwise, subsequently
Generalising: as a rule, as usual, for the most part, generally, ordinarily, usually
Exemplifying: chiefly, especially, for instance, in particular, namely, particularly, including,
specifically, such as
Illustration: for example, for instance, for one thing, as an illustration, illustrated with, as an
example, in this case
Emphasis: above all, chiefly, with attention to, especially, particularly, singularly
Similarity: comparatively, coupled with, correspondingly, identically, likewise, similar, moreover
