LL01: Introduction to Medical Microbiology / Keeping A Lab Notebook


Objective: To establish an organized template for keeping experimental records, procedures and
results


Procedure:
1. This is where each step of a given protocol is recorded
2. Be sure to clearly indicate any deviations that may occur during the experiment in red.


Notes:
● Basic equipment
○ Cleaning - Need to work in a sterile environment. Main tool would be an
autoclave. Heat pressure and steam to sterilize. 125 degrees C.
○ Growing - fixed incubator 37 C and Shaker incubator 37 C liquid growth media
aerated
○ Visualizing - microscopy
○ Storing - refrigerator 4 degree C
● Lab safety
○ No eating, drinking due to contamination risks
○ PPE use
■ Eyewear, latex (or nitrile) or thermal gloves, lab coat
■ Never leave lab with PPE on
● Cultivation of samples (growth conditions you need to have in order to study these
pathogens in the lab) and equipment used, Identification of samples (biochemical
assays) and tests available, Evaluation of samples (mainly done by microscopy) and
looking at the visualization and recognition of key characteristics of these pathogens.
