Diversity Interview Assignment (Simplified)
Step 1: Choose your interviewee
Interview someone whose background is different from yours (race, ethnicity, sexual
orientation, disability, immigration status, etc.).
Step 2: Plan your interview
Ask about their life experiences with diversity in areas such as:
Family life
Religion or social relationships
School experiences
Career or professional life
Step 3: Reflect on experiences for you and for your interviewee.
Think about how your experiences with diversity developed at different life stages:
Childhood
Young adulthood
Adult/professional life
Step 4: Compare and analyze
How are your experiences alike or different from your interviewee’s?
What factors shaped both of your views (family, peers, school, media, religion, laws,
community, etc.)?
How did these experiences affect your personal beliefs, choices, and views of society?
What issues with diversity do you see now, especially in K–12 education?
How could these issues affect your teaching or your students’ experiences?
How might you address challenges or create opportunities in your classroom?
Step 5: Connect to teaching standards
Analyze your findings using one set of teaching standards (KFFt, InTASC, or KTPS).
, 2
Step 6: Apply the diversity framework
Discuss how your findings relate to:
Personality
Internal dimensions (e.g., race, gender, age)
External dimensions (e.g., family, religion, education, income)
Organizational dimensions (e.g., workplace culture, professional role)
Step 7: Writing and citations
Cite your interviewee in APA 7th edition: (T. Interviewee, personal communication,
March 1, 2023).
Use first initial + last name + interview date.
Do NOT list the interview in your References.
Cite the teaching standard in-text AND list it in References.
Review the rubric before submitting.
Use the interviewees' responses to reflect on responses with your life in different stages of life
(young adult, and in adult professional) about impressions of ability, race, ethnicity, sexual
orientation, gender roles, or other variables as appropriate. Be sure to include all information
that relates to the factors that shaped these.
Analyze these in terms of personality, internal dimensions, external dimensions, and
organizational dimensions.
Apply your choice of KFfT, InTASC, or KTPS to today’s classroom.
IMPORTANT: Consider what shaped views toward diversity at different stages of life, including
early understanding, influences in childhood, especially school, young adulthood, career,
religion, family or community response, and/or another area of life.
Be sure to answer the same questions for yourself.
Apply teaching standards to today’s classroom.Apply APA 7th Edition:
Cite the interview once in any paragraph that uses information provided by the interviewee (N.
DeFreeze, personal communication, November 17, 2025).
Note that the period goes after the parentheses and not at the end of the sentence.
The interview is not cited in the References because no one can look it up.
