Regel: het voorvoegsel in- wordt im- als het volgende deel van het woord begint met p,
b, m.
Waarom? Dat is “uitspraakgemak”: impossible zegt makkelijker dan inpossible.

• im-: impossible, impatient, imbalance, immaterial
• in- blijft: inadequate, insufficient, incapable

Ezelsbrug: p-b-m → im.



2) quite / quiet

• quite = “vrij / nogal / redelijk” (rather, to a certain degree)
• quiet = “stil” (silent)

Voorbeeld: It’s quite noisy in here! Please be quiet!

Tip: quiet heeft een e zoals in silence (niet perfect, maar helpt soms).



3) getallen in samenstellingen (compounds)

Regel: als een maat/duur/afstand/gewicht/waarde met een numeral (getal) een
samenstelling vormt, blijft het zelfstandig naamwoord enkelvoud en je gebruikt
een koppelteken.

• a three-month holiday (niet: three-months)
• a five-pound fish
• a four-year-old (child)

Denkregel: “getal + maatwoord = enkelvoud + hyphen”.
