OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE

WHAT IS LEAN SIX SIGMA (LSS)?

= Method by which you want to solve / improve the root causes of problems.

Lean Six Sigma is a scientifically proven method to improve processes. It focuses on doing value-adding
activities as much as possible and avoiding non-value-adding activities or waste as much as possible. A
structure is provided for this and that structure consists of DMAIC. It starts with defining the problem (what
exactly is not going well?). You then carry out a measurement to estimate the extent of the problem and to
analyse what the root causes are. Ultimately, it is about realizing demonstrable improvement, a solution that
works.

Lean Six Sigma is widely used in all sectors and in all types of business units and departments and it helps you
learn to see where things can be done better.

Lean Six Sigma offers you a toolbox with all kinds of tools and instruments to measure and demonstrably
improve. This way you deliver more added value.

INTRODUCTION DATA ANALYTICS FOR LEAN SIX SIGMA

Lean Six Sigma is a methodology for process improvement. And it makes use of data and data analysis.

Questions that Lean Six Sigma projects can focus on:

- What is the most important issue that an organization should focus on?
- How to quantify a certain phenomenon?
- Are the employees of influence on the time it takes to handle a job?
- Which department shows the best performance?
- How to decrease the number of defects?
- Is there a real difference in quality before and after the project?

Use data to analyse to solve problems. Important to analyse and interpret data and how to use data for solving
problems.

Focus on the application of data within the Lean Six Sigma framework (but it is not limited to that framework).

, 1. DATA AND LEAN SIX SIGMA

INTRODUCTION TO LEAN SIX SIGMA

Lean Six Sigma is a data-driven approach to process improvement.

Process = series of action or steps taken to make a product or deliver a service. (Processes take place
everywhere. For example: Industry, Healthcare and Services).

Every organization can be seen as a collection of processes. And many organizations spend considerable time
on improving these processes.

- Why?
o Withstand competition
o Adapt to higher customer expectations
o Technological innovations

Answer is Lean Six Sigma = a stepwise approach to process improvement

Main features of Lean Six Sigma: it is evidence-based, and it makes use of process data.

Data used to analyse several aspects of your process.

Examples of the use of data:

- Find the biggest problem
- Diagnose the current process
- Investigate the effect of improvements

SUMMARY
Process improvement is important

Lean Six Sigma is a popular method to improve processes

,Data is important in process improvement to: Find the biggest problem; Diagnose the current process;
Investigate the effect of improvements.

DATA AND DMAIC

How does a lean Six Sigma project work? LSS offers a roadmap known as DMAIC.

DMAIC is the 5 phases for process improvement, based on measurements and evidence-based improvements
actions.

Hance, data, and data analysis is very important in any DMAIC project.

Belt = project leader of a Lean Six Sigma project. (Colours depend on the complexity and size of the project).

DMAIC
Define  Select project and establish objectives

Measure  Make the problem quantifiable and measurable (“You cannot improve what you cannot
measure”). (Useful techniques useful in the measurement phase (The Pareto Analysis, Sampling strategies))

Analyze  Analyze the current situation and make a diagnosis (goal is to determine the nature of the problem
at hand) (techniques useful in the analyze phases: Visualizing your data, determine % within specification)

Improve  develop and implement improvement actions (based on vital influence factors). But first the
effectiveness of proposed improvement action must be demonstrated: “In God we trust, all others must bring
data”. Possible way to do this is by using process data to show the effect.

Control  Control the improved process performance and close the project. Is vital phase because you do not
want the process to slips away to its performance level before the improvement. (Tools as two sample t-test)

, DATA ANALYTICS FOR LEAN SIX SIGMA
Data analysis is important in the

- Measure phase to collect measurements
- Analyse phase to analyse the current performance
- Improve phase to verify effectiveness of improvements actions
- Control phase to quantify the results of your process

SELECTING CTQS

What data should you collect? How would you measure… ?

. Make a problem measurable! That is how to select measurement characteristic that reflect your project
objectives. This is the Measure phase (=make the problem quantifiable and measurable) of the DMAIC phases.

The operationalization of the problem -> relate the project objective to relevant process metrics. (What
characteristic should you measure?)

CTQs = Critical to quality = a property of a process, product or service that is relevant to the project objective.

How to find QTCs?

- Which metric do I want to change?
- Does that contribute to the success of the project?

= (Y-variable, dependent variable, outcome variable)

! A CTQ can often be measured in multiple ways ! Always be critical when you select you CTQ and look whether
they capture the project objectives.

SUMMARY
CTQ (Critical To Quality) = a property of a process, product or service that is relevant to the project objective.
