"Sex Differences in Trauma and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Quantitative Review of 25 Years
of Research (Tolin & Foa, 2006) - ANSWERS-What's the method and how do you know?
Meta analysis
Who are the participants?
People from other studies.
What happened? (procedures)
Looked at data from other studies surrounding PTSD prevalence rates.
What was found? (results/conclusions)
Females are twice as likely to meet criteria for PTSD even though men are twice as likely to
experience potentially traumatic events (PTEs). However, even when they reported the same
PTE, females were more likely to meet the criteria for PTSD; with the exception that when child
sexual abuse or adult sexual assault was present, there was no sex difference. Multiple factors
that the researchers considered in relation to gender were an individual's self efficacy and sense
of threat.
What section of the study guide is it under?
Prevalence rates/etiologies.
Gilbertson's Study - ANSWERS-What's the method and how do you know?
Quasi Experiment
Who are the participants?
17 PTSD twin pairs (trauma exposed twin had PTSD), 23 non-PTSD twins. Monozygotic twins
(one served in combat and potentially had PTSD, one did not serve and didn't have PTSD).
What happened? (procedures)
