SECTION A (50 MARKS)
Question 1 (8 marks)
Two pre-reading exercises used in critical reading
Two effective pre-reading exercises used in critical reading are prediction and
activating prior knowledge.
Prediction involves encouraging readers to make informed guesses about the text
before reading it in detail. This can be done by examining the title, headings,
illustrations, or the author’s name. By predicting what the text might be about, readers
become mentally engaged and develop a purpose for reading. This strategy helps
readers to actively test their predictions while reading, which deepens comprehension
and critical thinking.
Activating prior knowledge refers to prompting readers to think about what they already
know about the topic, theme, or context of the text. This could include personal
experiences, previously read texts, or general world knowledge. By linking new
information to existing knowledge, readers are better able to understand unfamiliar
ideas and make meaning from the text. This process also helps readers to recognise
biases, themes, and underlying messages within a literary text.
