VSEPR only applies to covalent compounds of
S and p block elements
It predicts how small and ions are
molecules
shaped as well as how many electron lone pairs
a compound has Also if compound can be a Lewis base
This is based on two ideas
1 To minimise repulsion electron pairs try to get as
far away from each other as possible
2 Molecular shape around the central atom is determined
by the total amountof valence electron pairs
both bonded and non bonded lone pairs
Act see Otten Rev
Different shapes 5 core shapes
2 pairs linear
3 pairs trigonal planar
4 pairs tetrahedral
b pairs trigonal bipyramidal
6pairs octahedral
