Duration of lesson: 30 minutes
Lesson Aims: (DoBE, 2011)
- Application of mathematics to physical, social and mental abilities
- Confidence to work in groups
- Develop number vocabulary and number concept
- Develop number sense (meaning of numbers, representation of numbers in various ways)
Teaching approaches: Play-based activities with Required resources: Play dough,
Whole group, Independent station and small group laminated number sheets, flashcards with
work numbers and words and marbles for
counters

Introductory activity/warmer:
5 min
All learners sitting on the mat for introduction of lesson, learner’s count up to
number ten (clapping as they say each number) and then move towards
independent and small group stations. 4 groups of 4 learners will stay on the mat to
complete small-group activity and the remaining 8 learners will complete the
independent activity. The independent station should consist of learners who have
barriers to learning and the group-guided station should consist of learners who are
progressing well. After 15 minutes learners can move to a different stage if they
choose too.
Stages of lesson:
1. Independent Station: Play dough for number formation practice and using 15 min
counters to show how many marbles equates the number they have formed.
2. Small Group Work: Learners will use the flashcards with numbers and 15 min
number names to play a matching game in groups of 4. They will be guided
to find objects around the class or their counters to show how many objects
should be used for each number.
3. Tidy up Time: Teacher will sing “It’s time to pack away my friends, it’s time 5 min
for outside time”
