Challenges Facing the Criminal Justice System
Of all the challenges facing the Criminal Justice System, none are more challenging than

, the struggles of overcrowding, racism, and politics. The ‘tough on crime’ approach has led to a
dramatic increase in the prison population, increasing costs and decreasing funds that could go
to rehabilitation and reform. “The costs of mass incarceration have diverted resources from
health, education, and welfare programs.” ( ) This is going to pose a future problem for future
officers of the justice system. Increasing populations tend to increase the workload and the
officers of the court are already strained enough. Americans depend on the criminal justice
system to maintain safety and security.
Those who are the leaders and contributors to today’s criminal justice system have
ethical duties to society to make sure that America’s system is fair and just - this is especially
true in light of the recent criticism of it. The idea of “innocent until proven guilty” is on a rocky
road with police brutality and racial profiling still ever in our midst. “The virtuous element of
interactional justice is manifest by a genuine interest in the welfare, growth, and wholeness of
others and is manifest as beneficent treatment, kindness, and other behaviors that demonstrate
humanity.” (Anderson, Ichiho, 2017)
To look at the criminal justice system, means to also look at the politics of the system.
Since the law itself is created by politicians, politics is a key factor in all aspects of the law. And
since politicians can be influenced by all sorts of factors, media, constituents, monetary
donors, lobbyists, the criminal justice system can be influenced by this too.
The Influence of Social Media and Body Cameras
Society favors the perceived positive influence of the body cameras worn by police officers. Due
to the recent downturn of the opinion of police officers, there has been an increase in scrutiny
