Squids, fruit-flies, electric eel have enabled an understanding of the molecular
mechanisms by which neurons generate nerve impulses (AP) and trigger secretion of
neurotransmitters
2. Briefly discuss translational relevance of this research in understanding causes of
neurological disorders.

Part 1: introduction to AP and the techniques and tools used to study the
electrophysiology of neurons.
 If research scientists only focused on rats and mice as model organisms across
various science disciplines, then little progress would have been made regarding the
understanding of animal physiology.
 Hodgkin and Huxley use of the giant squid axon is the most famous example of
Krogh’s principle

,  The giant squid axon is a model organism in neurobiology and the starting point to
understanding AP in the NS.
 in 1939, Hodgkin and Huxley inserted an intracellular electrode inside an axon and
recoded the very first AP.
 In 1963, Nobel prize for physiology was awarded to Eccles, Hodgkin and Huxley for
their discoveries concerning the ionic mechanisms involved in excitation and
inhibition in the peripheral and central portions on the nerve cell membrane.
How to take the recording of the resting membrane potential of a squid giant axon?
 Recording microelectrode and reference electrode are outside the axon.
 Place recording microelectrode inside the squid axon
 Voltmeter will start to measure inside the membrane.
 Voltmeter reads inside the membrane as negative and outside as positive
 RMP is -65Mv.
