L.D. ORALS MANUAL
RECIPE TO EASILY PASS THE ORAL EXAMS AT THE KENYA SCHOOL OF LAW.
i) Practice.
This is very key. Practice always makes perfect. Do this by setting up a mock panel consisting of fellow
students. Let them be the panel and you the person being examined. Set the timer and let them shoot
the questions to you as you answer them. Do this activity at least once a day. This will help you build on
the following; confidence, audibility, ability to think on your feet. This training will make it easier for you
on the D day because you will be familiar with the process. Let the panel have a schedule of all the
qualities the examiners look for i.e. knowledge of the law-7 marks, presentation- 7 marks, composure- 2
marks, audibility- 2 marks and etiquette- 2 marks and award you the marks according to your
performance, this will help you monitor your progress and get corrected by your fellow students before
facing the panel.
ii) Revise previous oral questions.
It goes without saying that once you go through the previous oral questions you will stand a better
chance. To add on that try to formulate new questions in relation to the course outline. Set questions
touching on every aspect of the law. Remember you can be asked anything and everything. Be safe try
read wide, be informed and updated about everything that is happening around the world. E.g. in an
electioneering year it is prudent to have knowledge of electoral laws i.e. Chapter 7 of The Constitution,
IEBC Act, Elections Act etc. Being informed plus having the legal knowledge will be a plus for you.
iii) Please your panel.
By all humanly means possible, ensure that you please your panel. The panel holds your future at that
moment. The members of the panel exercise total discretion in awarding marks. They can award a zero
or award full marks, its u to them which means it’s up to you to be at their mercy and have a positive
rapport with them. Having knowledge and dressing well does not guarantee you a top score, other
panels move from the knowledge of the law to trying and testing your courtesy, attitude, temperament
etc. This you have to indeed balance and that’s why you need wisdom and not only knowledge. Only
wisdom can help you please your panel. So pray for wisdom.

When you appear before the panel be at your best behaviour, for the gentlemen, have a good suit
(ensure it is not extra fitting), do not apply too much cologne, for the ladies, have your hair nicely done
(avoid on the runway hairdos), do wear short

and tight skirts, do not have shouting colours on.....remember rule 13 of the advocates code of conduct
advices us to use common sense in our dressing and be careful on the type of shoes you wear.
Be calm and manage the tension by breathing in and out, it will stop your legs from shaking and your
stomach from rumbling and answer the questions. If you do not have an idea of what they are asking,
just be honest with them instead of wasting their time.
This is the greatest gamble of all time but ensure that it is a sure bet!
iv) Prayers.
This is just a must unless otherwise. Prayers will help you through your orals
revision and will see you through on the day you appear before the panel. Pray
always without ceasing and the Lord shall bless you. Pray for the best panel
