This document lists different types of globalisation, including a variety of their chances and challenges; it helped me a lot while preparing for my final exams (grade: 1+ (US: A+))

Inhaltsvorschau

Globalisation
Globalisation refers to the growing global network of trade, travel, knowledge
and influence. It is possible today for individuals and groups of people to buy
and sell products all over the world, to travel to any place and to exchange
information across the planet.
This freedom, however, can also put human rights, the environment,
individual cultures and financial security into danger. The advantages of the
global network are great, but the challenges could be greater.
Interestingly, the global network will probably be the key not only to global
problems, but also to their solutions.

Globalisation - Advantages and disadvantages

pros

- better education because of more possibilities in many different countries
- cheap traveling
- tourism as a source of income
- connect all over the world
- international trade
- choice of many different and international products in supermarkets

cons:
- exploitation of workers, especially in Asian and African countries
- leaving home as the only way to become successful in a globalized world
(homesickness? culture?)
- culture and traditions adapt to a uniform lifestyle and get lost
- ecological problems because of carbon dioxide caused by traffic and
growing industry

, People, cultures, lifestyles - Chances and challenges

Chances:
- move and travel freely -> see more of the world -> learn about other people
-> increases cultural awareness and reduces the causes of conflict
- ongoing exchange between academics, experts or politically interested people
all over the world -> more effective research, protests and activism -> fosters the
emergence of a global civil society
- migrants can move to different countries to find work and support their
families, helping these countries to fill important labour gaps at the same time
- international government organisations and NGOs can share knowledge and
bring help to where it is needed:
1. grant microcredit loans (to start a small business); dept relief
2. provide technology, education, food, medicines etc
3. conflicts between countries can be handled diplomatically and with a better
understanding of the situation because more information is available than ever
before
- global teamwork: finding friends and partners with similar interests all over the
globe; share traditions and regional and cultural identity; celebrate it together

Challenges:
- westernisation: western culture is propagated by the media and serves as an
example for many developing countries -> danger for cultural diversity of
nations’ languages, traditions, lifestyles, values and beliefs
- interventions of Western countries in other countries ´ affairs (use their
economical and political power): can cause divides and wars; help from the
outside hinders developing countries from building functional administrations
and infrastructure of their own
- global consumption, travel and transport -> limited resources are disappearing
-> made worse by large emerging markets (e.g. China, India) that are adopting
the West´s unsustainable lifestyle and consumerism
- disposal of waste to the Third World
- side effects of migration: illegal immigration, people-smuggling, frequently
bad treatment of immigrant minorities
