The paper explores the use of the Elimination Diet, such as the Gluten-Free Casein-Free (GFCF) diet, as an alternative intervention for children with ASD, often adopted by families seeking more accessible or less costly options compared to traditional evidence-based interventions. Key points discussed include: Origin: The concept of the elimination diet originated with Dr. Albert Rowe in 1941 to address allergies by excluding specific foods known to contribute chemicals that alter pathogenesis. Application in ASD: In the autism space, the idea involves extracting foods rich in gluten and casein, which are thought to be contributors of brain-altering functions. Pros of Elimination Diet: Simplicity: It only requires removing specific food types from the child's menu. Identification: It is reliable in determining trigger foods. Broad Benefits: It may provide health benefits not only for autism but also for other conditions like irritable bowel syndrome and ADHD. Practicality: It may help avoid heavy costs of hospitalization. Cons of Elimination Diet: Nutritional Deficiencies: Elimination of certain foods, like gluten and casein-rich items, can lead to a reduced supply of essential nutrients such as vitamin D, iron, calcium, and high-quality proteins. Cost-Effectiveness: Alternatives for eliminated foods (e.g., fish instead of cereal protein) may make the diet an expensive affair, undermining its perceived cost-effectiveness. Adversities: It can be restrictive, may not support client autonomy, and has been seen as a possible source of eating disorders like anorexia. Ethical Evaluation: The paper links the use of ED to the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) Ethics Code, specifically referencing: Code 2.01 (Providing Effective Treatment): Requiring professionals to provide treatment based on evidence-based efficacy. Code 1.01 (Being Truthful): Requiring providers to give truthful information about a treatment's benefits and issues. Code 3.01 (Responsibility to Clients): Citing clients' best outcomes as the core goal. Code 1.05 (Restrain Practice within Expertise): Requiring that only professionals versed with ED should provide related services. Communication: The document emphasizes that communication about evidence-based interventions must be tailored, using research-based facts for colleagues and concepts like motivational interviewing for families to gain trust and compliance

Elimination Diet

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disorder, with children

exhibiting a multifaceted set of impairments. Although different cases of the condition display

different combinations of difficulties, characterized by language and speech problems,

difficulties with forging social interactions, repetitive and restrictive behaviors and interests

(Cooper, Heron & Heward, 2007). Due to their complex problems, these children present needs

elusive to the parent and family, who oftentimes experience challenges to meet. While there are

many evidence-based interventions that devote to promoting the growth and development of

these children, it’ s without doubts that a majority of these interventions are difficult to follow-

through, especially for families in the lower social cadres. In some cases, the costs of healthcare

for autistic children is significantly higher compared to that of neurotypical counterparts (Liao &

Li, 2020). This has necessitated the crop and of alternative methods which families have

embraced and explored to help their course. One of these methods is the elimination diet (ED)

method.

The concept of elimination diets was first coined by Dr. Albert Rowe in his book,

Elimination of Diets and Patient Allergies, published in 1941. In his theory, Dr. Rowe

considered food as contributive of chemicals contributed through additives and those naturally

acquired. The concept of ‘exclusion diet’, therefore entailed exclusion of specific foods know to

source the supply of specific chemicals to alter the pathogenesis of conditions. Although

originally intentioned to tackle allergies, the concept later expanded to other arenas, whereby it

has found utility in ASD. For instance, the gluten-free casein-free diets (GFCF) adopted in the

autism space. The idea entails the extraction of foods rich in gluten and casein identified as
