Week 5 en 6
.
,
, Lecture week 5 16 jun 2024: hormones
• Puberty starts with hormonal changes and adolescence ends in a cultural defined process
• Two important hormones:
- Testosterone: mostly in males
- Estradiol: mostly in females
Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH):
• In Females: FSH stimulates the growth and maturation of ovarian follicles (the structures
that contain the eggs) in the ovaries. It also helps regulate the menstrual cycle and is critical
for the production of estrogen by the ovaries.
• In Males: FSH is important for spermatogenesis, the process by which sperm are produced
in the testes. It stimulates the Sertoli cells, which are essential for nurturing and supporting
the development of sperm.
Luteinizing Hormone (LH):
• In Females: LH triggers ovulation, the release of a mature egg from an ovarian follicle. After
ovulation, LH supports the formation of the corpus luteum, which secretes progesterone
necessary for maintaining the uterine lining and supporting early pregnancy.
