1 INTRODUCTION
This tutorial letter provides feedback on Assignment 01. You need to review the content of this tutorial
letter carefully, as it will give you valuable insight into your studies and guide you in your learning
experience.
You will receive your marked assignment together with the marker's comments and the assignment
evaluation sheet (rubric). The assignment evaluation sheet (rubric) shows how marks have been
allocated; it will help you identify areas that need improvement (TL201 does not indicate the
marks allocated, but the rubric indicates the assessment criteria and mark allocation). Therefore, you
should read this tutorial letter in conjunction with the feedback given in the assignment and the rubric
attached to your assignment.
2 FEEDBACK ON ASSIGNMENT 01
The outcomes for learning units 1 to 5 were assessed in Assignment 01, which was an essay-type
assignment. Guidelines were provided via the online MNB3701 module site, “Additional Resources”
tab, on the technical aspects of answering essay type questions and in Tutorial Letter 101. You would
have been penalised if you did not adhere to these guidelines. In addition, merely copying facts from
prescribed books, without supporting your arguments where necessary, would not have been
sufficient.
Remember that you had to number your pages and include a table of contents as the first page of the
assignment. This assignment starts with an introduction. The introduction should clearly state the topic
or topics of the essay. It should also introduce the reader to the article or case study on which the
assignment is based, which was the article entitled “BMW faces technological disruption”.
The following is an example of an introduction to the assignment:
1 INTRODUCTION
The discussion below is based on the article entitled "BMW faces technological disruption”. The
integrative case study provides a briefing on numerous technological challenges affecting the
automotive industry. In consequence, BMW has to take strategic decisions how to invest in new
technologies and decide on which projects to prioritise. Further, in the sections below, the topics that
are dealt with are: (1) key resources and capabilities that BMW possesses (2) the VIRO framework
applied to appraise BMW’s resources and to comment on how sustainable BMW’s success is (3)
identification of the threats to BMW’s competitive advantage and (4) recommendations on prioritising
investments in future projects.
