, BASIC IMPLANT SURGICAL PROCEDURES
GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF IMPLANT SURGERY
❖ PATIENT PREPARATION:
• Most implant procedures are done in office using local anesthetic.
Conscious sedation indicated for some cases.
• Risks and benefits and needs should be thoroughly explained prior to
surgery.
• A written & informed consent should be obtained for the procedure.
❖ IMPLANT SITE PREPARATION: Basic principles
• Implant must be sterile & made of biocompatible material (Ti).
• Implant site should be prepared under sterile conditions. Pre-rinsing
with chlorhexidine gluconate 1-2min immediately before procedure
(aids in reducing bacterial load present around surgical site).
• Implant site should be prepared with an atraumatic surgical technique
that avoids overheating of bone during preparation of recipient site.
• Implants should be placed with good initial stability.
• Implants should be allowed to heal without loading or
micromovement. Undisturbed healing period 2-4 or 4-6months depend
on bone density, bone maturity & implant stability. Compact bone
offers much greater surface area for bone-implant contact than
cancellous bone. E.g. Thin layers of cortical bone & large cancellous
spaces like posterior maxilla have lower success rates than areas of
dense bone.
