- Don’t forget to enjoy the experience.

General remarks first interview (1)
- General guideline
- What is ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ can differ across specific situations or patients, and deviate
from general guideline.
- Can differ across instructors and seminars.
- Check book for suggestions for responses and phrasing.

From closed to open-ended questions
Are you okay today?  where would you like to start today?  what has been good about
your day so far?

Are you married?  Tell me about the important relationships you have in your life.

General remarks first interview (2)
- ‘Open-ended’ followed by ‘closed-ended’.
- Vary open-ended and closed-ended questions.
- Be careful with suggestive questions (try not to fill in too quickly what a person may be
thinking …)
- While thinking about what to ask next, don’t forget to listen.

Opening and introduction
- Greet/shake hands.
- Introduce yourself (including professional status – internship) and verify patient’s name.
- Explain purpose (no therapy).
- Indicate available time and what happens after interview.
- Explain note taking.

- Personal details
o Name
o Gender
o Date and place of birth
o Marital status  “Wat kan jij mij vertellen over de belangrijke relaties in jouw
leven?”
o Children
o Occupation  “Op dagelijkse basis, waar hou jij je zoal mee bezig?”

- Referral
o Verify source and stated reason for referral.
o Patients’ opinion of referral

Chief complaint (1)
“Please tell me (in your own words) what problems made you come for treatment.”
 “Wat zou jij mij in je eigen woorden kunnen vertellen over de reden waarom je naar hier
bent gekomen?”
- Allow for several minutes of free speech.
